Sports Network | October 08, 2008
Memphis, TN (Sports Network) - JaVale McGee tallied 20 points and grabbed eight boards as the Washington Wizards downed the Memphis Grizzlies, 89-80, in preseason action from the FedEx Forum.
McGee, a seven-foot center-forward rookie out of Nevada-Reno, may very well have been auditioning for a starting role with a report from the Washington Post surfacing Wednesday that center Brendan Haywood may be done for the season with torn ligaments in his wrist.
Andray Blatche netted 14 points while DerMarr Johnson donated 11 for Washington, which dropped its preseason opener to Dallas Tuesday.
That game saw forward Antawn Jamison leaving in the first quarter with an injury to his right knee. The Post also reported that an MRI exam performed Wednesday revealed only a contusion and the two-time All-Star is expected to be ready for the team's regular-season opener.
The Wizards are already without guard Gilbert Arenas likely for the next several months because of a knee injury.
Rudy Gay scored a game-high 21 points while Hakim Warrick notched a double- double with 16 points and 11 boards for the Grizzlies, who dropped their preseason opener to Houston Tuesday.
