Gameday Open Thread: Blazers at Wizards

OK...erase, erase, erase memories of last night.  This game will be better!  Register your pre-game thoughts, in-game comments, and post-game reactions here.

Remember it's once again a 4:00 Pacific start.

--Dave (blazersub@yahoo.com)

Update: Jason Quick is reporting that one of the first effects of last night's game will be Taurean Green replacing Sergio Rodriguez in the second unit. The reasoning, according to Quick, boils down to "he's had multiple chances and only come through once (vs. Detroit)". Of course I'll lay pretty good odds that Taurean will also be up and down, so that position may change again before long.

I still believe in this team
Last night's game was extremely disappointing but this is still a team that convincingly beat Dallas and Detroit.

I think they will come out inspired tonight!  It will be a tougher game- Washington is better than Philly, but the Wizards played last night also.  I think the Blazers can get it done.

You were wrong buddy
The game is over now.

You were wrong. They most definitely did NOT come out inspired tonight.

A urine-poor performance, in the final analysis. Just godawful. I want a refund for my expectations.

What game last night?
What game? I remember having a dream about a game, we were winning and ahead by 25pts, then I went to a buffet where everyone said to eat as much as I liked, but then about half way through I suddenly gained 20lbs and everyone told me I was fat. Strange dream....but I don't remember any game.
"Mother Nature started this fight, I think it's about time we ended it!"

by Krang on Nov 17, 2007 1:26 AM PST   0 recs

Buffet?
Let's hope tonight's buffet has a little more 'goodness' in it!

by GimmeIme on Nov 17, 2007 3:51 PM PST to parent up   0 recs

i wish i went to the buffet too.
damn, this team is younger than i thought.

Lunch Buffets are EVIL
And I am seldom able to turn them down. Especially the ones that have sushi of pizza. All my sweat and toil for naught -POOF!- in an afternoon gastronomic orgy of raw fish and pepperoni.

While puzzled about Joel, I'm actually not horrified by last night's game. I'm actually sort of heartened by the fact that they were in a position to absolutely demolish a team.

Here's my thinking: watching Detroit play the L*kers last night, I was struck by how easily they did things. They just weren't trying that hard and they're in the game. Reminds me of SA.

When WE do things, they always seem really, really hard. Like, the only way we can stay competitive is to expend twice the effort of other teams which, over the long haul, is not a cost-effective solution.

Last night's game said to me we're a dang fine team when we're expending major effort but we're not so good at cruise control yet. (Or demonstrably bad at cruise control.)

This as opposed to prior teams which were awesome (or thought they were awesome) at cruise control but couldn't ever go into high gear.

Ergo, THESE GUYS HAVE HIGH GEAR SORT OF FIGURED OUT!

So no, I don't regard last night's game as a catastrophe. Much easier for me than that earlier road loss in NO.

But Joel... I can't figure out Joel. How can someone so sound and good not be able to get on the court?

by Fizbin on Nov 17, 2007 12:03 PM PST   0 recs

is it actually happening?
Or are they just throwing it out there as a possibility?  It looks like the latter to me.

by OregonDuckworth on Nov 17, 2007 1:46 PM PST to parent up   0 recs

Just a possibility.
I'm wondering if there's a benefit to both teams if the blazers would do the trade and then buy marbury out for cap space later. I can't imagine for a minute letting him on the team.

by bubba on Nov 17, 2007 2:03 PM PST to parent up   0 recs

I think Pritchard shot this down yesterday
As I recall reading, there was some laughter involved.  Of course, KP is a master of misdirection, and it's conceivable this thing is actually going to happen.  But we don't have to worry about Steph Infection (as Peter Vecsey calls him) ever suiting up for a Blazer game.  Apparently, the idea would be for Paul Allen to buy out Marbury's humongous contract.  Considering what Allen has already shelled out lately, that doesn't seem likely.

by hurryup09 on Nov 17, 2007 3:10 PM PST to parent up   0 recs

Beating traps
Too bad the Blazers won't have much time (if any) to bone up on beating traps before tonight's game.  No doubt the Wizards will test the Blazers early to see if last night's meltdown was a fluke.

If the Blazers can't make opponents pay for trapping, then they'll be getting a steady diet of it.

by hurryup09 on Nov 17, 2007 3:14 PM PST   0 recs

If I was Paul Allen
I might be angry enough after last night's ridiculous defeat to do something like dump two players (and a third, if you count Marbury) in order to free up roster spots.

...Hello? (peeking my head through the entrance)
I just wanted everyone to know that I am still a Blazers fan. That was a "veteran" team that beat us last night. And we're a "very young and inexperienced" team. In time we'll learn how not to fall apart on the road.

Never doubted
your fandom.  We all find that we get hurt worst by the ones we love.  We love the Blazers something fierce and they put us through the wringer last night, eh?

Good afternoon all!
I'll be here during the game reflecting and such.  Check the main part of this post for Jason Quick's report on Sergio and Taurean, the latest news!  And enjoy the game with us!

It'll probably be a better game.

So Taurean it is
Makes sense, might as well see what the kid can do.

by OregonDuckworth on Nov 17, 2007 4:10 PM PST to parent up   0 recs

Wow
Gilbert NOT STARTING

by Dave on Nov 17, 2007 4:10 PM PST   0 recs

Apparently resting
a sore left knee.  That means they think this game is winnable without him.

Let's teach them the error of their ways.

by Dave on Nov 17, 2007 4:11 PM PST to parent up   0 recs

Hurr
Arenas is not starting.

by damir on Nov 17, 2007 4:11 PM PST   0 recs

Turnover to start with
Roy coughs it up

by Dave on Nov 17, 2007 4:12 PM PST   0 recs

Blake off a nice pick
pass to LMA, missed jumper.  Frye rebound, Roy three...miss.

by Dave on Nov 17, 2007 4:13 PM PST   0 recs

I wish Blake
could score off of thoe picks.

Jamison misses.  Miss-fest to start.

by Dave on Nov 17, 2007 4:13 PM PST   0 recs

lamarcus misses
I jinxed him

by tweener on Nov 17, 2007 4:13 PM PST   0 recs

Frye turn-around
from 15.  Looked like Lamarcus for a second.

2-0 Blazers.

by Dave on Nov 17, 2007 4:14 PM PST   0 recs

Blazers miss
Jamison misses a three.  Blake way short on a mid-range jumper.

Haywood inside fouled by Frye on a shot

by Dave on Nov 17, 2007 4:15 PM PST   0 recs

Haywood hits both
5-2 Wizards

by Dave on Nov 17, 2007 4:15 PM PST   0 recs

Nice play
Roy drove, kicked out to Web, who drove and kicked to Frye.  Frye missed the shot though.

And Butler hits.  7-2

LMA misses and Frye fouls underneath.

by Dave on Nov 17, 2007 4:16 PM PST   0 recs

Ouch
long two by Washington, almost a three.  9-2

by Dave on Nov 17, 2007 4:17 PM PST   0 recs

Roy late in the clock miss
We have to be quicker on our offense.

Now Wizards dunk.  11-2.  Timeout Nate.  Struggling on defense.

by Dave on Nov 17, 2007 4:18 PM PST   0 recs

Was there any word on Joel?
Maybe in the pre-game?  Is his stomach-and/or-groin bothering him?  I just heard them mention it a few times in last night's broadcast.

by GimmeIme on Nov 17, 2007 4:18 PM PST   0 recs

Looks like we still have a hangover.
Still not being aggressive on either end of the floor

by ppilot on Nov 17, 2007 4:19 PM PST   0 recs

I guarantee
we come alive at some point during this game

by Dave on Nov 17, 2007 4:20 PM PST to parent up   0 recs

This is brutal.
However, you know Frye was completely underwhelming as he started the year. He seems to be getting just a tick better every other game so. Maybe by the mid point of the year...

by bubba on Nov 17, 2007 4:20 PM PST   0 recs

Ohhhh
Frye out on the floor facing up is a bad idea if he's not shooting.  He double-dribbled there.

by Dave on Nov 17, 2007 4:21 PM PST   0 recs

is it me or does our halfcourt offense
rely entirely on either Roy or jump shots?

pretty unimaginative.

by sergioFTW on Nov 17, 2007 4:22 PM PST   0 recs

Yes
Our over-reliance on jump shooting is a big issue this year.

by Dave on Nov 17, 2007 4:27 PM PST to parent up   0 recs

uhm
Is Joel injured? Why is Frye playing with two fouls still?

by damir on Nov 17, 2007 4:22 PM PST   0 recs

OHHHH
Now Frye airballs a long jumper.  We look like Philly did in the first half last night.

How many opportunities at the rim have we had tonight?  Anybody?

Answer:  zero

by Dave on Nov 17, 2007 4:22 PM PST   0 recs

Blake drives
and dishes to Martell in the corner.  Long two is MONEY.

Przy block on the other end!

by Dave on Nov 17, 2007 4:23 PM PST   0 recs

Yay
Webster hits an open two after a nice pump-fake 3.

by damir on Nov 17, 2007 4:23 PM PST   0 recs

AH
SEE. Joel with a block!

by damir on Nov 17, 2007 4:23 PM PST   0 recs

WOW
They worked a nice play between LMA in the post and Webby at the three but Web clanged the three-pointer off the bracket.  Confidence, son.

by Dave on Nov 17, 2007 4:24 PM PST   0 recs

Hmmmm
Webby misses from three again, this time short.

We have a really hard time when our secondary scorers aren't hitting.  Jack anyone?

by Dave on Nov 17, 2007 4:25 PM PST   0 recs

LMA dunk along the baseline!
11-7

Nate's timeout apparently addressed some issues.  They haven't scored since.

by Dave on Nov 17, 2007 4:26 PM PST   0 recs

nice pass from web
to lma for the dunk

by tweener on Nov 17, 2007 4:26 PM PST   0 recs

Webster will eventually find his groove
Hopefully its sooner than later

by ppilot on Nov 17, 2007 4:26 PM PST   0 recs

Good D by Martell...
I am very impressed with him...even though his shot isn't falling, he still contributes in other ways.  This is what happens when you don't hang your head.  Keep it up Martell, and teach Trout a few things about that!

by GimmeIme on Nov 17, 2007 4:27 PM PST   0 recs

Jack in
I think maybe this low-scoring start may be better for Portland.  It's not Washington's game.

BLOCK PRZY!

by Dave on Nov 17, 2007 4:29 PM PST   0 recs

Roy drives
to Webster for three...just off.  He was in rhythm that time.

by Dave on Nov 17, 2007 4:29 PM PST   0 recs

Martell drives!
Stutter-step leaner for TWO!  11-9!

by Dave on Nov 17, 2007 4:30 PM PST   0 recs

That's how you get your shot to fall!
Martell hard through the lane, off balance two

9-11

by GimmeIme on Nov 17, 2007 4:30 PM PST   0 recs

Is it my imagination
or is Roger Mason Jr. the guy who heads that Itchy and Scratchy studio?

by Dave on Nov 17, 2007 4:30 PM PST   0 recs

WOOH
What a drive by Martell! When his outside shot isn't falling, he is looking to muscle his way to the rim. I love it!

by damir on Nov 17, 2007 4:30 PM PST   0 recs

Jack pretty good defense there
but the Wiz work for a three.  14-9

Roy drives and is blocked.

Wiz can't convert on the other end layup and LMA DUNKS!

14-11

by Dave on Nov 17, 2007 4:31 PM PST   0 recs

Roger Mason Jr.
hits a three.  17-11

by Dave on Nov 17, 2007 4:32 PM PST   0 recs

Huh
NO CHARGE call? Good D by Martell, that should have been an offensive foul. Nice dunk by LMA.

by damir on Nov 17, 2007 4:32 PM PST   0 recs

Jack muscles up
for a short shot, misses but is fouled.  I love his strength to get his shot up when fouled.

Green in.

by Dave on Nov 17, 2007 4:32 PM PST   0 recs

Let's see what you can do!
Taurean Green in the game, after Sergio failed to bring the ball up the court.

by GimmeIme on Nov 17, 2007 4:32 PM PST   0 recs

Don't worry about Washington
hitting these threes early.  They'll start missing them and lose if they keep it up.

by Dave on Nov 17, 2007 4:33 PM PST   0 recs

LMA wide open jumper hits!
First assist Taurean.

by Dave on Nov 17, 2007 4:33 PM PST   0 recs

Oh...ooops
Taurean fouls Caron Butler with 2 seconds left, less than that on the shot clock.  It's for three too...three free throws.

by Dave on Nov 17, 2007 4:34 PM PST   0 recs

Huh
They are giving him 3FT? Whaaaaaaaat?

by damir on Nov 17, 2007 4:34 PM PST   0 recs

Butler hits all three
22-15, 2 seconds left.

Baseball pass is intercepted.  Blatche shoved Outlaw out of the way to get it.  Quarter over.  22-15

by Dave on Nov 17, 2007 4:35 PM PST   0 recs

What in the world
Blanche pushes Outlaw out of the way to get the ball and they do not call anything?!

by damir on Nov 17, 2007 4:35 PM PST   0 recs

We have not forced a turnover yet
We are shooting 33%, Washington 29%

by Dave on Nov 17, 2007 4:37 PM PST   0 recs

Ugh
Comcast SportsNet commercial is just rubbing this crap into our faces. Wizards have a deal with DirecTV, yet Blazers don't.

by damir on Nov 17, 2007 4:38 PM PST   0 recs

Jack drives to Outlaw for three!
IN!  24-18

It would help if this was one of Trout's on nights.

by Dave on Nov 17, 2007 4:38 PM PST   0 recs

4 turnovers in 1st quarter
Washington has 0...Blatche with a weak shot that goes in, then TO from the corner for 3!!
18-24

by GimmeIme on Nov 17, 2007 4:39 PM PST   0 recs

When you play zone
one missed assignment equals a whistle

by Dave on Nov 17, 2007 4:40 PM PST to parent up   0 recs

What the heck
were three Blazers doing bunched under the rim on that last defensive possession?  Bad stuff.  Lucky they missed and didn't get the board.

by Dave on Nov 17, 2007 4:40 PM PST   0 recs

Why the heck
are we shooting 24 footers every possession?  Outlaw hit one, Taurean missed, Outlaw missed.  Please work for a real shot!

by Dave on Nov 17, 2007 4:41 PM PST   0 recs

who is
roger mason

by tweener on Nov 17, 2007 4:41 PM PST   0 recs

hahah
Are my eyes deceiving me or does that adbanner on the court say "Chevy Chase Bank??"

by damir on Nov 17, 2007 4:42 PM PST   0 recs

Didn't notice that
Probably next door to Akroyd Savings+Loan.

by Dave on Nov 17, 2007 4:44 PM PST to parent up   0 recs

Martell worked nice on denial to Blatche there
but the big guys didn't rotate and help him.

by Dave on Nov 17, 2007 4:42 PM PST   0 recs

Green sloppy turnover
Wizards break.  Layup Mason.  32-19.  Nate timeout.

by Dave on Nov 17, 2007 4:43 PM PST   0 recs

Portland is playing like the Sixers did in the first half yesterday.

by damir on Nov 17, 2007 4:44 PM PST   0 recs

by soulja2boy on Nov 17, 2007 4:44 PM PST   0 recs

Webster still can't buy a bucket
If can start hitting that the middle will clear out  a bit more.  Green looking like a rookie

by ppilot on Nov 17, 2007 4:44 PM PST   0 recs

Uh oh
Here comes the press

by Dave on Nov 17, 2007 4:45 PM PST   0 recs

24 second violation
This is the main consequence of the press defense.  Not that we turn it over, that we're working against the clock.

by Dave on Nov 17, 2007 4:46 PM PST   0 recs

Trout drives
and is fouled.

by Dave on Nov 17, 2007 4:46 PM PST   0 recs

Travis misses first
hits second.

We need to hit those!

32-20
